Six thousand acres of legitimately hilly pine barrens, the closest Long Island gets to backcountry. The Paumanok Path rolls through kettle holes and moraine ridges, and you can hike for hours without hearing the LIE. Locals call it the hills for a reason.
LOCAL TIP
Use the county lot on the east side of CR-111 near Hot Water Street. Follow the white Paumanok blazes; the unblazed sand roads all look the same, so bring a map app with offline tiles.
