Clamming in Hempstead Town Waters

Point Lookout, NY

Raking your own dinner out of the bay flats behind Point Lookout is the most old-school Long Island activity that still exists, and the Town of Hempstead makes it legal for twenty bucks a year. The daily limit is 100 shellfish per permit, which is roughly 95 more than a first-timer will actually find.

LOCAL TIP

Go at dead low tide with a basket and a steel rake, stick to the certified open waters on the town map, and call the Bay Constables if you are unsure where.
