David A. Sarnoff Pine Barrens Preserve

Riverhead, NY

Over 2,000 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak just south of the Riverhead traffic circle, one of the biggest unbroken chunks of pine barrens left on the island. The blue loop runs 2.5 miles, the red loop 4.2, and the Paumanok Path cuts through the whole thing. Silence, sand roads, and the occasional whip-poor-will.

LOCAL TIP

Lot is on the west side of Route 104 about two miles south of the circle. Grab the free DEC Suffolk lands access permit online before you go, and wear orange in fall hunting season.
